FAQs related to teak leaf leather

Teak leaf leather is a leather like fabric created from ‘teak leaves’.  Fallen/ mature teak leaves are taken and soaked in water solution to make it flexible. After this they are arranged into sheets and sun dried and then reinforced on a fabric backing. This fabric is manufactured exclusively by our partner “Leaf Creation Co., Ltd.” In Chiang Mai, Thailand.

The entire process of manufacturing the product- right from picking leaves to making the bag is ethical and each bag is hand-made at Mr. Leaf’s manufacturing facility. Staff from ‘GnL Accessories’ have visited Mr. Leaf’s facility in Chiang Mai, Thailand and could not be more proud to be associated with this company. By using these products you are helping save forest fires and contributing to the income of those who are born in rural teak plantation areas.

Teak-leaf leather is not 100% biodegradable.

Your teak-leaf leather bag is water resistant. It is not water proof.

Your teak leaf leather bag is water-resistant. It should not accumulate mould in humid conditions. You can wipe it with a damp cloth in case it does.

The colour of the product varies with the age of the leaf used to manufacture it. A product made using a mature leaf will look slightly darker than a product manufactured using a young leaf. We try to use minimal dyes to rectify this as we believe the slight inconsistency actually brings out the beauty of working with a natural product, handmade product.

No, your bag is not discoloured. A leaf is a natural product and is subject to attack by various pests/ insects. Some of the leaves we work with have been partially eaten by insects but we do use these leaves to make our bags. What you think as being discoloured actually bears the story of the leaf’s journey- from falling from a tree to becoming your bag (and being partially eaten in-between) 😊

At ‘GnL Accessories’ we believe that being eco friendly does not end with manufacturing an eco-friendly product. We would not like to see our products in landfills once you believe it is time to get a new bag or that our product has reached the end of it’s lifecycle. We would encourage you to send the product back to use so that we can recycle the parts that can be recycled and work out how to best dispose the rest. We are a new company but we can assure you that we are working on this aspect and will update our website with details shortly.

FAQs related to cork fabric

Cork fabric is made from cork oak trees which are over 25 years old and are ready to be ‘harvested’. After being left for over 6 months to dry out, this precise process continues with steaming and boiling the material for extra elasticity. The oak tree trunk regrows and harvesting the tree actually increases it’s lifespan.

Our cork fabric is manufactured by our partner Dongguan Huichung Cork Products Co., Ltd. at it’s factory in Dongguan, China. The company imports the cork bark from Portugal and then converts it into cork fabric. We are proud to be associated with this company. The staff have assured us that they follow ethical manufacturing practices and have manufactured cork fabric for our bags using a ‘water PU’ backing. The chemicals used to manufacture this kind of PU are relatively lesser.
